Presenting a VR experience with avatars during the GSG Global Summit

Demo GSG global summit

Mel Slater, GuestXR Technical Coordinator and Investigator and Co-director of the Event Lab of the University of Barcelona, has participated in the GSG Global Summit celebrated in Málaga (Spain) on October 2nd-3rd, 2023.

During the event, Mel Slater highlighted the use of avatars for the good of human beings by presenting a VR experience where Pablo Picasso discusses the nature of creativity with the founder of modern neuroscience, Santiago Ramón y Cajal. The work illustrates a conjunction between human creativity, generative AI and virtual reality.

The programming of the VR scenario was done by Dr Ramon Oliva, Dr Jaume Gallego and Dr Michael Wiesing, and the video was created by Raul Gallego Abellán, a video journalist, from the Event Lab, University of Barcelona, a part-time PhD student. The concept was conceived by Mel Slater.

This demo presentation was held within the session “Breakout 1E: Where creativity meets impact: Picasso, Cajal, and Generative AI”, on October 2nd. It was participated by top-notch experts in the field of modern neuroscience and social impact: Idan Segev, from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Mavi Sanchez-Vives, from IDIBAPS-Hospital Clinic, and Maria Herrero Pidal, from Transcendent.
