D1.1 Guidelines for ethics by design
This present deliverable builds on the findings of deliverable 5.1 (state of the art and literature review) and also informs deliverable 5.1 (survey and interview design). The objective of this deliverable is to provide guidelines and tools for the operationalisation of “ethics-by-design” methodology within the GuestXR project. The guidelines and tools contained in the deliverable are intended to be used by members of the consortium or associated projects together with the participation of ethics and responsible innovation researchers. However, researchers in XR and artificial intelligence can also use insights and resources from these guidelines independently. The deliverable begins (section 2) by sketching several relevant approaches that fall under the broader umbrella term of ethics-by-design. These include value-sensitive design and Virtual Ethnography and Future Studies. The deliverable then provides a toolkit (section 3) for researchers to use in the implementation of ethics-by-design approaches within design and innovation processes. This toolkit is best implemented in the context of close collaboration with ethics and/or responsible innovation researchers, for example in the context of a research stay or “embedding” of an ethics and/or responsible innovation researcher within a laboratory or relevant scientific group. The toolkit is divided into four potential stages of implementation in the ethics-by-design approach: Prepare, Explore, Understand, Improve & Implement. Each stage within section 3 then contains several tools that can be utilised in the implementation of the ethics-by-design approach.
