The University of Barcelona displays GuestXR-related VR demo at ICIP 2022

ICIP 2022

Researchers from the EventLAB of the University of Barcelona participated at the International Conference on Image Processing (ICIP 2022), celebrated on October 16th-19th in Bordeaux (France), where they displayed a Virtual Reality demo developed under the framework of the  GuestXR project.

This demo recreates meetings between remotely located participants in 3D Sushi restaurant environment, where the participants are represented by avatars that closely resemble themselves, based on single frontal photographs in each case.

The demo was initially developed for a Financial Times newspaper interview between the world-renowned philosopher David Chalmers and journalist John Thornhill.

The VR is based on “VR United”, a VR technology created by Drs Ramon Oliva, Alejandro Beacco, and Jaime Gallego under the European Research Council Research project MoTIVE led by research Prof. Mel Slater.

The IEEE ICIP is the world’s largest and most comprehensive technical conference focused on image and video processing and computer vision. The conference showcases world-class plenary speakers, tutorials, exhibits, special sessions, industry sessions and women in engineering.

In this year edition there were opportunities to network with the brightest minds in academia and industry from this field. In addition, several events targeting students and professionals were also featured.
